Early adopters of Domino-based Webmail awaited the release of R5 with great anticipation. R5 promised increased functionality, a better interface, and a more robust server environment. But the first release of the R5 Webmail client left users in shock. It contained a Java applet-laden client that placed a huge burden on server hardware and bandwidth requirements. The R5 Webmail client was useless over dial-up lines, and lack of personal address book integration was a major disappointment to those who had grown accustomed to this functionality in R4.6.
